Chi Chi Gonzalez takes the next step in his return from Tommy John surgery to the big leagues. He has been called up from Triple-A Albuquerque to make Tuesday's start against the Giants. It's his first big-league appearance since July 7, 2016. He does lead Albuqerque in innings pitched this season, and has been their most consistent starter in the last month. Madison Bumgarner will start for the Giants. He is 3-7 with a 4.28 ERA, but two of those three wins have come in two starts against the Rockies.
It's been awhile since Gonzalez pitched in the big leagues, which speaks to the veteran status of Giants Kevin Pillard, Pablo Sandoval and Stepheen Vogt, each of whom has faced Gonzalez, but none of them have a hit off him. Bumgarner is familiar with the bulk of the Rockies. There are five players on the Rockies active rosters with 21 or more plate appearances against Bumgarner, plus Trevor Story, who is on the Injured List.
