The Giants arrived on Monday night from Cincinnati, where they split a four-game series despite allowing 37 runs. They did take three of four from the Rockies at Oracle Park last month, one of only three series they have won this season. They took two of three from the Dodgers at Oracle Park last week, and swept a two-game interleague visit to Toronto.
While the Rockies have lost three of four to the Giants this year, they did win the season series by a 12-7 margin each of the last two years.
The Rockies are in fourth place in the NL West, one game ahead of the Giants. The Rockies are 5-5 in their last 10 games. The Giants are 4-6 in their last 10 games.
The Rockies tenatively have Kyle Freeland as the probable starter for Thursday. They could decide to push him back a day if they want to insert Jeff Hoffman in that spot. Hoffman, expected to be called up from AAA Albuquerque to replace Tyler Anderson in the rotation, would be on normal rest. They, however, could decide to hold Hoffman for either Friday or Saturday, particularly in light of the weather forecast, which could force a postponement in any of the three games in the Giants series, which could eliminate the need to call up Hoffman because the Rockies are also off next Monday.
The Rockies have sent lefthanders Jake McGee and Chris Rusin on rehab assignments with AAA Albuquerque.
