The Rockies will be facing Padres rookie Cal Quantrill for the first time. He is the son of former big-league pitcher Paul Quantrill. His father was a reliever, who pitched 14 years in the big leagues, making 80 or more appearances four consecutive seasons (2001-03) for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Jeff Hoffman, who has allowed five earned runs or more in three of his four starts since his more recent call-up by the Rockies, will start for the Rockies. It's his third career appearance against the Padres -- the first since 2017.
The hitters will be feeling out pitchers with little history to rely on. Quantrill has never faced a Rockies hitter. Four Padres have a total of 15 career plate appearances -- just three hits -- against Hoffman.
