Sunday Recap; Rockies 8, Orioles 7; Marquez Hits and Pitches

5-1 at the end of six innings, the Rockies faced a ninth-inning challenge, but rallied from from a 7-6 deficit to pull out an 8-7 victory. First, Ian Desmond worked Orioles reliever Mychal Givens for a base-loaded walk, and then Tony Wolters delivered the game-ending sacrifice fly. Wolters, who hit only .170 a year ago, raised his average to .309.

At the Plate. ...

Nolan Arenado continued his offensive explosion this month, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI and his 15th home run of the season. He is hitting .422 for the month, raising his season average to .335.

Right-hander German Marquez, who won the NL Silver Slugger Award for pitchers last season, had a three-run triple in his only official at-bat. He also had two sacrfice bunts. The triple came in a four-run sixth, which gave the Rockies a 5-1 lead. Marquez ran his hitting streak to four games, and has now driven in a run in each of his last four games, the first MLB pitcher to do that since Yovanni Gallardo in 2012.He has nine RBI this month, the most for a pitcher Rick Wine of the Cardinals. He is the 11th Rockies pitcher to have a triple.

On the Mound. ...

German Marquez wound up with a no decision, charged with four runs in 6 1/3 innings. He, however, limited the Orioles to one run the first six innings, and departed leaving two men on base with a 6-2 lead. The bullpen, however, allowed the two runners he left on base to score, and then gave up three runs of its own to create the walk-off situation.

Marquez, the pitcher on the 2018 Silver Slugger team, went 1-for-1 with a triple, three RBI and two sacrifice bunts, and is:

-- The first Rockies pitcher with a four-game hitting streak since Jorge De La Rosa (Aug. 5-27, 2016);

-- Joined Brian Bohanon (Aug. 11-27, 2000) as the only Rockies pitcher to have an RBI in four consecutive games.

_ Became the first pitcher in the big leagues with a four-game RBI streak since Yovanni Gallardo of the Brewers July 31-Aug. 17, 2012.

-- Set a franchise record with nine RBI in May, the most in a single money for an M:B pitcher since Rick Wise had nine in August 1973.

--And already has tied Denny Neagle for the fourth highest RBI total in a season since Denny Neagle in 2001.
