Quick Hits: Rockies Murphy Duo Does the Job on St. Patrick's Day

Sponsored by Sam's No. 3 -- No. 1 at Meal Time

MESA – Sunday was St. Patrick’s Day so it was only fitting that the Murphys delivered for the Rockies. Daniel Murphy hit his first home run of the spring to start a Rockies comeback for a 7-2 victory against the Cubs, and Tom Murphy finished off the scoring with his third home run of the spring.

Daniel Murphy had only one home run off a left-hander last year, and it came off the Cubs Jon Lester, who gave up 25 home runs in 2018, but only five to a left-handed hitter.

n Lefthander Mitch Horacek, a graduate of Thunder Ridge High School in Highlands Ranch and Dartmouth College, came over from the minor league camp for the second time this spring and worked a scoreless ninth. The Rockies selected Horacek from the Orioles in the Minor League Draft at the 2017 winter meetings. He was with Double-A Hartford last season, compiling a 2.20 ERA in 51 games, striking out 75 while allowing 50 hits in 61 1/3 innings.

n Chad Bettis started and worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks, striking out two, for the Rockies.

n Mike Dunn worked a scoreless sixth, his seventh scoreless appearance of the spring.

n Scott Oberg worked the eighth, and now has eight scoreless innings in seven spring appearances. He has nine strikeouts in eight innings.

n The Rockies host the Reds in a 2 p.m. (MDT) game on Monday. The game will be televised by AT&T Sports Net. Kyle Freeland will start for the Rockies.

n Garrett Hampson, who started at second base, stole his sixth base of the spring.

n Mountain Range High School will play Ralston Valley at Coors Field on Monday, the first of 13 high school games scheduled to be played in the ballpark. The schedule, which runs through the end of April, includes five doubleheaders.
