Reliever Adam Ottavino had the good fortune to enter free agency after a career year with the Rockies and reportedly has agreed to a three-year, $27 million contract with the Yankees. His eye-opening 2018 success notwithstanding, the Rockies weren’t going to invest heavily again in a relief pitcher and re-sign Ottavino, 33, after allocating a significant sum to their bullpen last winter.

They committed $106 million to their bullpen following the 2017 season, in part because they weren’t sure what to expect from Ottavino after his performance that year. Ottavino's deal with the Yankees matches the contracts the Rockies doled out to relievers Bryan Shaw and Jake McGee last off-season.

Ottavino spent seven seasons with the Rockies after they claimed him off waivers from the Cardinals just before the start of the 2012 season. And now Ottavino, who is from New York and lives in the city in the off-season, gets to go home and join the Yankees’ frighteningly deep bullpen.
